NEIL BURGESS
Writing to an English theatre manager, he promises, "I will bring over my entire
company: scenery, horses, and all my mechanical effects..."
Autograph Letter signed: "Neil Burgess", 1p, 8x10½. Park Theatre, Boston, Massachusetts,
1892 January 23. To "Luther Monclay Esq", in full: "Your letter has just reached me after a
month delay owing to there being no postage on the letter. My business manager Mr. Wesley
Sisson is at present in London trying to arrange for the production of the 'County Fair' in London
in all its details. I will bring over my entire company: scenery, horses, and all my mechanical
effects, which are all covered by English patents. You will find Mr. Sisson at Loms Exchange 57
Charing Cross. Yours very truly". American vaudeville comedian Neil Burgess (1846-1910) was
famous for two reasons: his female impersonations, especially his portrayal of elderly
"widders," and his highly original special effects. His stagecraft included a turntable allowing
horses to gallop while on stage; and a device to simulate the sound of a large crowd.
Writing here in his capacity as stage manager, Burgess is ready to take the Charles Barnard play
The County Fair on an English tour. Burgess also portrayed "Aunt Abigail Prue" in the play.
One horizontal fold. Creased. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
