NEIL GORDON KINNOCK
Neil Gordon Kinnock, former leader of the Labour opposition in the British Parliament, signed the back of this king of diamonds playing card in red ink.
Playing card signed "Neil Kinnock" in red ink. 3¼x2¼ card with rounded corners. Signed on the blank back of a king of diamonds playing card. The son of a miner, Kinnock, born in Tredegar, Monmouthshire, Wales, Great Britain in 1942, was handed the unenviable task as leader of the Labour opposition during much of the Conservative ascendancy of the 1980s and 1990s in the British Parliament. Kinnock was elected MP for Bedwellty in 1970 and quickly rose through the Labour ranks, thanks in part to the patronage of Labour leader Michael Foot. Kinnock replaced Foot after Labour's resounding loss to the Conservative party in 1983, despite having never held anything higher than junior ministerial posts. But Labour didn't fare much better during Kinnock's tenure. It was defeated in the 1987 and 1992 general elections, though it did regain seats lost during the 1983 elections. He resigned as Labour leader after the party's 1992 loss. He also served as vice president of the European Commission from 1999 to 2004. He was made Baron Kinnock of Bedwellty in 2005. Lightly toned. Paper clip impression at top edge, which touches signature. Otherwise in fine condition.
