NELSON F. ADKINS
The literary scholar solicits material for his book on American poet Fitz-Greene Halleck.
Typed Letter signed: "Nelson F. Adkins", 1 page, 8½x11. New York City, 1928 June 18. To Oliver B. Barrett, Chicago, Illinois, in full: "Some time ago, you will remember, I wrote you regarding the biography of Fitz-Greene Halleck which I am writing. At the time you told me that you had in your collection two letters of the poet, with two manuscript poems. You also spoke of several other letters you had in extra-illustrated lives of Halleck and Poe. As I am now bringing to a close my work on Halleck, I am interested in knowing whether you could have made for me negative photostatic copies of these letters and poems. In my biography of Halleck I am planning to publish either in the body of the work or in the Appendix all the available Halleck letters which have not thus far appeared in print, and I should very much like to have those in your collection included. I shall greatly appreciate any assistance you can give me. Yours very truly". Nelson F. Adkins, a professor of literature at New York University, published studies of early US poets Fitz-Greene Halleck and Phillip Frenau, as well as American literature textbooks. His work was infused with a strong nationalism; he championed Thomas Paine's Common Sense, downplaying the importance of European thinkers in the shaping of American government. His extensive collection is housed at NYU. Multiple mailing folds. Toned and creased. Corners creased. Paper clip impression at top left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
