NELSON J. LEONARD
The genius organic chemist signs a research article he co-authored for Science magazine in red ink
Article signed: "With best wishes to/ Professor Gilde and/ his students at/ Marietta College/ Nelson J. Leonard" in red ink. 4 pages, 8¼x11. Article co-authored by Leonard titled "Defined Dimensional Change in Enzyme Cofactors: Fluorescent "Stretched-Out" Analogs of Adenine Nucleotides", originally printed in Science magazine Vol. 195, pp. 296-298, January 21, 1977. Nelson J. Leonard (1916-2006) was considered one of the most important chemists of the twentieth century, considered a master in the application of organic synthesis to the solution of important problems in chemistry, biochemistry, and plant physiology. He was studying as a Rhodes Scholar in 1939, before his studies were interrupted by the war and forced his return to the U.S., eventually earning a Ph.D. in 1942 from Columbia University. From 1943 to 1955, Leonard continued his work in chemistry while also chasing a career as a bass-baritone in various mid-Western orchestras; after his early election to membership in the National Academy of Sciences, Leonard realized that since his peers had chosen to recognize him as a chemist, then he had better do something about it, and the heavy professional demands of chemistry meant that there would be no more singing performances. His additional research distinctions include the Roger Adams Award in Organic Chemistry (1981) and the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award (1995) from the American Chemical Society. Toned. Stained throughout. Light surface creases. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
