signed trading card
Sports Card signed: "Nellie Briles". Color, 2½x3½. Shown in Rangers uniform. Major League
record through 1975 on verso. © 1976 Topps Chewing Gum. Nelson "Nellie" Briles
(1943-2005) won 129 games in 13 Major League seasons, making major contributions to
World Championship teams in St. Louis (1967) and Pittsburgh (1971). In the 1971 Series,
his 2-hitter in Game 5 helped the Pirates to an upset victory over the favored Baltimore
Orioles. He spent his last four seasons in the American League, two each with the Kansas City
Royals and Texas Rangers. While Briles played for Pittsburgh, he developed a reputation
moonlighting as a nightclub comedian and singer. After being traded to the Royals, he
released a music single (titled "Hey Hank") that pled for the home run hitter to break the
all-time record against another pitcher. Fine condition.
