NEVILLE CARDUS
Rare signed letter from the cricket critic to a friend, saying that he will be unable to attend an event in October, saying that in the winter, he is "seldom in Manchester on Sundays"
Autograph letter signed: "Neville Cardus", in black ink, 6x9. July 19, 1929. In full: "Dear Mr Booth, I'm sorry I have not answered until now your letter of June 17. I've been terribly busy + somehow your letter got misplaced. I'm afraid I can't accept your invitation for Oct 20. In the winter I am seldom in Manchester on Sundays; it is always a long day for the [illegible] journalists. Yours sincerely". English writer Neville Cardus (1888-1975) was best known for his work as a critic, in particular of cricket, which was a lifelong passion of his. Taking what had previously been a very factual and numerical practice, Cardus added art to the writing of the sport, and is often considered to have been an influence on all modern day cricket critics. He was also a well-respected music critic, although he lacked any formal education on the art. He spent most of his writing career with the Manchester Guardian, but also spent a large portion of his life at the Sydney Morning Herald during World War II, only returning to England at the close of the war. Multiple folds. Toned. Corners lightly worn and creased. Binding holes in left margin. Light surface creases. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
