NEWTON C. BLANCHARD
Signature from the 33rd Louisiana Governor, in office from 1904-1908
Signature: "Newton C. Blanchard/Shrevport/LA/4th dist.", 7¼x3¼. Newton Crain Blanchard (1849-1922) was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives, serving Louisiana's 4th congressional district from 1881 to 1884. Thereafter, he served in the Senate from 1894 to 1897. A lawyer, he was elected to the Louisiana Supreme Court as Associate Justice in 1897, serving until 1903. With over 16 years in the Louisiana community as a lawyer and businessman, Blanchard successfully ran for Governor of Louisiana in the election of 1904. After retiring from his gubernatorial office in 1908, he returned to Shreveport to continue his law practice, where he remained until his death in 1922. His last act in legislation was serving as President of the State constitutional convention in 1913. Lightly toned. Left edge frayed from binding. Otherwise, fine condition.
