B/w bust photo of Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Nyota Uhura, signed with her "Blessings"
Photograph signed "Bleesings/Nichelle/Nichols". B/w, 7¾x9¾ overall, 7¼x9¼ image, one surface. Nichols, born in 1932, got her start as a singer and dancer with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton; in fact, her first movie part was a bit role in the musical Porgy and Bess (1959). However, she's best known as Nyota Uhura, the Enterprise's communications officer, on Star Trek (1966-1969). Uhura was an historic TV character, one of the first black characters to be portrayed in a non-stereotypical fashion and was one-half of the first interracial kiss on TV (in the 1968 episode Plato's Stepchildren). Nichols has portrayed Uhura in numerous Star Trek movies and video games, as well as in the animated series (1973-1974)... all in spite of the fact that she considered quitting Star Trek after its first season. She was constantly harassed by bigots, her fan mail was withheld, and she hated William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk and who reportedly cut or altered her lines. (She was reportedly persuaded to stay by one of the show's biggest fans: the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.). After the end of the original series, she did recruitment work for NASA, released two albums of music and wrote her biography Beyond Uhura: Star Trek and Other Memories (1994). In all, Nichols has appeared in over 40 movies, video games and TV shows. More modern audiences may recognize her as Nana Dawson from Heroes (2008). Lightly toned, creased and bowed, otherwise in fine condition.
