Typed letter signed: "Nicholas Murray Butler" as President of Columbia University, ¼p, 7¾x10¼. New York, 1902 January 14. On letterhead of Columbia University to Mr. Samuel W. Hamilton, New York. To: "Dear Sir". In full: "I thank you for your cordial note of the 13th, and shall try to arrange with the Faculty of the College of Physicians and Surgeons for an opportunity to greet the students of the Medical School in their own building at an early date. Cordially yours." Nicholas Murray Butler(1862-1947) was President of Columbia University from 1901 to 1945. He was designated President Taft's running mate in 1912 after Vice President Sherman, died six days before the election. (Taft and Butler received 8 Electoral Votes in the 3-cornered contest with Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Butler sought the Republican Presidential nomination himself in 1920 and again in 1928. Butler was awarded the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. During his lifetime Butler was considered one of America's great sages; the New York Times annually published his Christmas letter to the American people. Subsequent biographers have been more critical, noting his autocratic style as University President and his penchant for self-promotion. Toned. Corners rounded and creased. normal mailing folds.
