MITCH MULLANY starred as teacher Nick Freno, a character based on the producers' memories of a popular New York City elementary school teacher named John Freno. In the first season, Freno taught at a middle school, with the cast shown here. In the second season, Freno moved to a high school, with only fellow teachers Cyphers and Jackson returning from the original cast. Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher was shown on the WB network for two seasons (1996-1998). The five youthful actors pictured here shared a Young Artists Award as best young ensemble cast. Although the series ended, the careers of many of these actors did not. ARJAY SMITH and CARA DeLIZIA were fellow students again on Boston Public. ROSS MALINGER found recurring rolls on Recess and Party of Five, among other shows, as did KYLE GIBSON on Get Real. CHARLES CYPHERS played a coach on Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. PORTIA DeROSSI moved directly to a lawyer's role on Ally McBeal. JONATHAN HERNANDEZ can be seen in the 2007 feature film, The Bucket List. STUART PANKIN, previously a voice on Dinosaurs, returned to that role in another animation: For the Love of Monkeys. CLINTON JACKSON's forte is stand-up comedy, featured on Comedy Central and in live performance, and he is in great demand for TV commercials. The story of Mitch Mullany, however, has a sad ending. He wrote and starred in the feature film The Breaks and hosted the ABC reality show, All American Girl, but he died in 2008 of a diabetes-related stroke at age 39. Fine condition.
