NICK (LIGHTNIN') STEWART
Shown (and signing) as "Lightnin" from the Amos & Andy TV show
Photograph signed: "Nick O Demus/Stewart/Light/nin/of/Amos/& Andy/TV". B/w, 8x10. Shown in character from Amos 'n' Andy. Captioned in lower margin. Actor Nick Stewart (1910-2000) first used the name Nickodemus on Broadway, in Louisiana Purchase and other plays. He was heard in comedy roles on radio shows, including the Rudy Vallée show, and in film (Go West Young Man, 1936). As was standard in the American entertainment industry of that era, Stewart was almost always cast in servile roles: waiters, porters, jungle "natives". As late as 1976, he played a shoe shine boy in Silver Streak. When the radio comedy Amos 'n' Andy was made for television (1950-1953), a cast of black actors was necessary, and Stewart reluctantly accepted the role of the slow-moving Willie "Light'nin' Jefferson. He did so to earn enough money to found the Ebony Showcase Theatre in Los Angeles (1950), which gave black actors an opportunity to appear in quality dramatic productions. Stewart also worked for Disney, providing the voice of Br'er Bear in Song of the South (1946), and the voice of Splash Mountain at Disneyland. Fine condition.
