NINON VALLIN
Rare signature from the French soprano on a Victor Record for a recording of "JOTA"
Record signed: "Ninon Vallin", in black ink, 11½ diameter. Pathe Recording 78 RPM record titled: "JOTA". Verso titled: "1. Nana 2. Seguidilla Murciana". French soprano Ninon Vallin (1886-1961) originally intended a career as a concert performer, but eventually became an international success as an opera and operetta performer in a four decade career. After studying in Paris, Vallin was personally chosen by Claude Debussy to sing in the first performance of his Le martyre de Saint Sébastien. The vocalist became a favorite of the composer, also premiering his Trois poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé, and appearing in several other pieces of his. She made her opera debut in 1916 at the Teatro Colón as Marguerite in Faust, and appeared regularly at the hall for the next 20 years. Vallin would perform with several other opera companies during her career, and also proved popular in French operetta. She continued to perform until the 1950's, and served as a guest professor at the Conservatory in Montevideo until 1959. Record is cracked through the center, with two pieces of tapes supporting crack on verso. Soiled. Chip on top of record. Signature very slightly faded. Otherwise, fine condition.
