NOLAN RYAN
Baseball's greatest strikeout pitcher remembers his first strikeout for the Mets on this
11x14 color photo.
Photograph signed: "'1st K'/9-11-66". Color, 11x14. Nolan Ryan, only a tenth round draft
pick for the Mets, recorded his first of 5,714 strikeouts on September 11, 1966, as he notes
here. Ryan pitched only 3 innings that season, recording six strikeouts but giving up five earned
runs. Ryan recorded a save in Game 3 of the 1969 World Series for the Miracle Mets, the only
World Series in which he was destined to appear. In 1971, in a monumentally bad trade, the
Mets sent Ryan and four other players to the California Angels for shortstop Jim Fregosi. Ryan
went on to stardom, recording more strikeouts (5,714), more no-hitters (seven) and more
seasons (27) than anyone in baseball history. Ryan, who retired after winning 324
games, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1999, his first year of eligibility, receiving 98.79% of
the votes cast. Ink stamps and mounting tape present on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
