Christmas/holiday signed: "Precious Memories/Nora D. Holt/66-67", in red ink, 8x7 open flat, 8x3½ closed. Born in Kansas City, Nora D. Holt (1895-1974) was the first black woman to earn a master's degree. Having a passion for music, Holt studied music composition, musicology, and music criticism, first graduating with a bachelor's degree, and later achieving her master's. She was hired to the Chicago Defender as a music critic for several years and eventually married her fourth husband, George Holt, who passed on his fortune to her after his death. She lived the rest of her life as a popular socialite heavily involved in the music scene, later teaching music a number of years. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
