NORMA SHEARER
Large photograph (10x13) of the actress smiling brightly, inscribed
to a fan with "best wishes"
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Jacqueline Borreé/with best
wishes/from/Norma Shearer", in ink, B/w 10x13. Norma Shearer
(1903-1983, born in Edith Norma Shearer in Montrea, Quebec, Canada) won
one Best Actress Oscar for The Divorcee (1929-1930) and was nominated for
five more: Their Own Desire (1929), A Free Soul (1930), The
Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934), Romeo and Juliet (1936) and
Marie Antoinette (1938). She was married to MGM producer Irving
Thalberg until his early death in 1936. Shearer turned down the starring role in
Mrs. Miniver (1942); the part was offered to Greer Garson, who won an
Oscar for her portrayal of Mrs. Miniver. By some accounts, Shearer did the same
for the part of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind (1939). She retired
from films after 1942. Corners worn and creased. Lightly toned. Soiled on outer
margins. Signature faint and in poor contrast, but clearly legible. Small stains
on left margin. Edges lightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine
condition.
