NORMA SHEARER
In the year she starred in The Barretts of Wimpole Street, for which she was nominated for the Academy Award as Best Actress, and Riptide, the actress thanks a fan for her "sincere interest" in her work and for a drawing.
TLS: "Norma Shearer", 1p, 7¼x10½. Los Angeles, California, 1934 July 18. On sheet imprinted with her name to "Dear Miss Hollenbach". In full: "Thank you so much for your most charming letter. It made me truly happy to learn of your sincere interest in my work, and I am deeply grateful. The drawing was lovely and the resemblance was very gratifying. It was most thoughtful of you to send it, and I appreciate it very much. My sincere good wishes to you always. Gratefully". With original, typed mailing envelope. Addressed to Miss Catherine Hollenbach in Laureldale, Pennsylvania. In 1934, Shearer starred on the big screen in Riptide (as Lady Mary Rexford) and in The Barretts of Wimpole Street, for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Elizabeth Barrett. Norma Shearer (1902-1983) had starring roles in major films but her rise to top stardom coincided with her 1927 marriage to Irving Thalberg, Vice President and "Boy Wonder" of MGM. She received six Best Actress Oscar nominations, winning for The Divorcée (1929-1930). Soon she was billed by MGM as "The First Lady of the Screen". Shearer continued in top roles but without the guidance of her husband, who died in 1936, she made errors in judgment and her career floundered. Shearer retired from the screen in 1942. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Minor stain at blank right edge. Fine condition.
