After the successful explosion of the first atomic bomb in the New Mexico desert (Project Trinity), a "destination team", codenamed Project Alberta, was sent from Los Alamos to Tinian Island to prepare for the actual delivery of atomic bombs to their targets in Japan. This group photo of the Project Alberta team has been signed by four participants. NORMAN RAMSEY, a senior scientist in the bomb design group on the Manhattan Project, won a Nobel Prize in Physics more than 40 years later (1989) "for the invention of the separated oscillatory fields method and its use in the hydrogen maser and other atomic clocks". FREDERICK L. ASHWORTH (1911-2005) was Operations Officer and weaponeer on Bocks Car which dropped the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, August 9, 1945 (three days after the Hiroshima bomb). HAROLD M. AGNEW was a Los Alamos physicist assigned to the Manhattan Project. LAWRENCE H. JOHNSTON was civilian instruments officer on The Great Artiste, a companion bomber which accompanied the Enola Gay on the Hiroshima mission, dropping instrument packages by parachute to measure the blast.
