Autograph manuscript signed "Norman Greenbaum/9/25/00". 1 page, 8½x11, musical bar paper. Titled: "SPIRIT IN THE SKY/by Norman Greenbaum". ©Great Honesty Music. Partial lyrics to Greenbaum's 1970 hit Spirit in the Sky. Greenbaum, born in Malden, Massachusetts in 1942, is probably best known for the Jesus rock song Spirit in the Sky, which peaked at no. 3 on Billboard's Pop Singles charts in 1970. (Interestingly, Greenbaum is Jewish, not Christian) Unfortunately, this is the only song from Greenbaum that most people are familiar with. Two other songs from that era, 1970's Canned Ham and 1971's California Earthquake, both broke into the Pop Singles Top 50 and Top 100, respectively. But that's about it for his hits. Greenbaum also had another hit with his first band, Dr. West's Medicine Show & Junk Band, which played an odd combination of jug band music and psychedelic rock. Their song The Eggplant That Ate Chicago flirted with the Top 50 in 1966, but failed to break through. Greenbaum has retired from performing but continues to promote concerts.
