Robert D. Boyer at Ohio State University in 1975. In it, he thanks Boyer for
what he wrote about Hot L Baltimore and that "the general public is far
in advance of its moral guardians".
Typed letter signed "Norman Lear". 1 page, 7x10¼, on Tandem
Productions letterhead with "TP" logo embossed near upper left edge. April 7,
1975. Addressed to Robert D. Boyer, Assistant Professor, Division of
Comparative Literature, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. In full:
"Dear Professor Boyer, I want to thank you for your warm and generous
words regarding HOT L BALTIMORE and for taking the time to put them down. I
agree completely that the general public is far in advance of its moral
guardians - - and it is my constant fight to make the networks understand that.
Again, I appreciate your thoughtfulness in letting me have your feelings - -
and, as a writer, I adore the style with which you expressed them. Sincerely,
Norman Lear, NL/agt". Known for his ground-breaking situation comedies
that often focused on controversial issues, Lear, born in New Haven,
Connecticut in 1922, was the executive producer of such series as
Sanford and Son, Maude, Good Times, Hot L Baltimore,
One Day at a Time and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman in addition to
All in the Family and The Jeffersons. He has also produced
films, including Come Blow Your Horn (1963), The Night They Raided
Minsky's (1968), The Princess Bride (1987, executive producer) and
Fried Green Tomatoes (1991, executive producer). Lear has also written
episodes for some of his productions, directed several series,
and made guest appearances on several television shows, including providing
the voice of Benjamin Franklin on South Park (2003). Lightly creased.
