NORMAN MAILER
Signed, handwritten note refusing to autograph a photo he "detests."
Autograph Note signed: "Norman Mailer", at bottom of 8½x11 typed letter. To Bob Hemminger, Woodbine, Georgia, who had requested that Mailer sign some photos (not included), Mailer replies in full: "I happen to detest that photograph and never autograph it. I'm sorry. Cheers". Norman Mailer's first novel, The Naked and the Dead (1948), was a best selling account of combat in World War II. Mailer won two Pulitzer Prizes: the first for The Armies of the Night (1969), a nonfiction narrative about a protest march on the Pentagon; the second for The Executioner's Song (1979), about the life and execution of serial killer Gary Gilmore. Mailer, who co-founded "The Village Voice" and ran for mayor of New York, has published 39 books to date. The outspoken and quarrelsome Mailer, married six times, has his share of detractors, but his literary skills are widely admired. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
