NORMAN MAILER
The author signs a typed letter explaining that you lose a piece of your soul whenever you
send a signed photo.
TLS: "Norman Mailer", ¼ page, 7¼x10¾. No place, 1981 April 13. On his personal stationery
to Mr. Wood. In full: "I never send signed photographs, partly, I suspect, from the old primitive
superstition that you lose a piece of your soul every time a picture is taken, but in any case, you're
certainly welcome to my signature." Written the year after Mailer was awarded a Pulitzer Prize
in Fiction for The Executioner's Song (1980). The versatile writer (novels, biographies, plays,
poems, essays, sports and political commentary, etc.) had already received a Pulitzer in General
Nonfiction for The Armies of the Night in 1969. His first novel, the acclaimed The Naked
and the Dead, had been published in 1948. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
