The Oscar winning screenwriter's signature on a typed letter,
thanking a fan for their gift of a Confederate bill in exchange for his
signature, saying it is the first time he has received a gift from a fan.
Extremely rare!
Typed letter signed: "Norman Reilly Raine", in black ink,
8½x7¼. April 22, 1932. In part: "Dear Mr. McDonald: Many thanks indeed
for your letter requesting my signature, and enclosing a stamp and a Confederate
bill [items not included]. I assure you that the enclosure was not
necessary. Nevertheless, I appreciate it; for you are the first individual who
has accompanied a request for a signature with a gift of that or any other
nature". Norman Reilly Raine (1894-1971) was an American screenwriter
and author, best known for his creation of Tugboat Annie, which
spawned comics, films, and television series. Originally writing the story
for the Saturday Evening Post, Tugboat Annie was turned into a
1933 film which proved successful, and allowed Raine to write for a number of
other films. Although Raine wrote for over 30 films, his best remembered is
The Life of Emile Zola (1937), which won him an Oscar for Best
Screenplay. Multiple folds. Toned. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn.
