NORMAN ROCKWELL
America's noted illustrator pens a note on a First Day Cover honoring Grandma Moses, writing "I was a friend and admirer of Mrs. Moses"
First Day Cover signed: "Dear Sgt. Christensen,/I was a friend and/admirer of Mrs. Moses./sincerely/Norman Rockwell", 6½x3¾. Honoring Grandma Moses, 6-cent Grandma Moses stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., May 1, 1969, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Like fellow artist Grandma Moses, NORMAN ROCKWELL (1894-1978) captured scenes from American life in his magazine covers and illustrations, often noted for their humorous and accurate depictions of 1940's and 1950's life. Rockwell's drawings, however, were skillfully executed with minute attention to detail and were so realistic that they usually resembled photographs rather than paintings. He painted over 300 covers for the "Saturday Evening Post" (1916-1965) after beginning his career at age 18 as an illustrator for "Boy's Life". In addition to his many works for the Post, Rockwell illustrated the "Boy Scout Calendar" from 1926-1976. Rockwell published his autobiography, Norman Rockwell, My Adventures as an Illustrator, in 1960. Although she did not start painting until age 76, prolific "American Primitive" painter Anna Mary Robertson "Grandma" Moses (1860-1961) produced about 2,000 works. Painted mostly on masonite board, her primitive paintings depicted scenes from her childhood and rural life. Between her 100th birthday on September 7, 1960 and her death on December 13, 1961 at the age of 101, she completed 25 paintings. Fine condition.
