NORMAN ROCKWELL
Two images of Richard Nixon painted for "Look" magazine.
Poster signed: "Sincerely/Norman/Rockwell". Color,
22½x30½ overall, image 22½x28½ (one surface). © 1968 Cowles Communications,
Inc. Rockwell created this illustration of RICHARD NIXON when the latter
was a candidate for 37th President. It appeared on the cover of "Look" magazine
on March 5, 1968. Nixon had also posed for Rockwell when he was Vice
President. That cover appeared on the "Saturday Evening Post" in November 1960,
when Nixon had made his first bid for the presidency. Norman Rockwell
(1894-1978) captured scenes from American life in his magazine covers and
illustrations, often noted for their humorous and accurate depictions of
1940's and 1950's life. Rockwell's drawings, however, were skillfully
executed with minute attention to detail and were so realistic that they usually
resembled photographs rather than paintings. He painted over 300 covers for
the "Saturday Evening Post" (1916-1965) after beginning his career at age 18 as an
illustrator for "Boy's Life". In addition to his many works for the Post,
Rockwell illustrated the "Boy Scout Calendar" from 1926-1976. Rockwell published
his autobiography, Norman Rockwell, My Adventures as an Illustrator, in
1960. Chipped, torn and paper scuffed at 2 places at right edge (1x¼-inch and
1½x¾ paper loss). Lightly creased, else fine condition. Framing or matting would
eliminate defects.
