NORMAN ROCKWELL
The American illustrator sends a note of birthday wishes to a fan,
stating that at the writing of the letter, he had just turned 82
Typed letter signed: "Norman Rockwell", 1p, 5¾x7½.
Stockbridge, Massachusetts, 1976 February 3. On his imprinted letterhead
to Mr. Verost. In full: "Your son has written me that your birthday is
on February 5th and, even though this will reach you a few days late, I would
like to send you my very best wishes. As a matter of fact, I was 82 today. I
trust that you will soon be feeling better." Norman Rockwell (1894-1978)
captured scenes from American life in his magazine covers and illustrations,
often noted for their humorous and accurate depictions of 1940's and 1950's
life. Rockwell's drawings, however, were skillfully executed with minute
attention to detail and were so realistic that they usually resembled
photographs rather than paintings. He painted over 300 covers for the
"Saturday Evening Post" (1916-1965) after beginning his career at age 18 as
an illustrator for "Boy's Life". In addition to his many works for the
Post, Rockwell illustrated the "Boy Scout Calendar" from 1926-1976. Rockwell
published his autobiography, Norman Rockwell, My Adventures as an
Illustrator, in 1960. Fine condition.
