NORMAN ROCKWELL
The painter and illustrator advises an art student.
Typed Letter Signed: "Norman Rockwell," 1p, 8½x11. No place, 1950 May 14. To Mrs. Fritz Aebischer, Honeoye Falls, New York. In full: "There is a great improvement in this drawing for now the girl is the principal thing in the room. Your letter was forwarded to me from Westport. It is quite evident that your best work is done with children. I think your natural instinct and understanding is toward the quite young. I do not like your other drawings anywhere near like those where you show children. My advice would be to bear down in this direction and only use older people when absolutely necessary to complete story of a picture. Within a few days you will receive a letter from the Institute of Commercial Art which, I think, will interest you very much. It is a new plan for the lessons and I know that all students are going to like it." Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) captured scenes from American life in his magazine covers and illustrations, often noted for their humorous and accurate depictions of 1940's and 1950's life. Rockwell's drawings, however, were skillfully executed with minute attention to detail and were so realistic that they usually resembled photographs rather than paintings. He painted over 300 covers for the "Saturday Evening Post" (1916-1965) after beginning his career at age 18 as an illustrator for "Boy's Life". In addition to his many works for the Post, Rockwell illustrated the "Boy Scout Calendar" from 1926-1976. Rockwell published his autobiography, Norman Rockwell, My Adventures as an Illustrator, in 1960. Signed in green ink. Light folds, one through the "R" in Rockwell. Otherwise, fine condition.
