The significant British peer, grandson of the tragic Earl Mountbatten
of Burma, discusses his experience while filming Quartermass, signs name
blue ink
Typed letter signed: "Dear Mr. Croxford,/ Romsey" in
blue ink. 1 page, 6¾x7½. Written on personal Broadlands letterhead. Broadlands,
Romsey, Hampshire. August 7, 1980. Addressed to Victor Croxford, Esq. of Surrey,
England. In full: "I was delighted to receive your letter, fascinating
enclosures, and the two packets of Thames silt! How amusing that we should have
met before on the set of Quartermass. I can still remember how unpleasant the
conditions were in our catacomb set, very cold, dank and muddy and I was quite
surprised that all the old people survived the grueling period of shooting.
Please fine enclosed two autograph postcards for your collection. With best
wishes, Yours sincerely". Norton Knatchbull (b. 1947), 8th Baron
Bradbourne, formally titled Lord Romsey from 1979 to 2005, is a
British peer and heir-apparent to the Earldom Mountbatten of Burma. A descendant
of Queen Victoria and the grandson of Admiral of the Fleet Lord Louis
Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, Knatchbull suffered the loss of his
grandfather, his brother, and his grandmother the Dowager Lady Brabourne to an
IRA assassination bomb; he was married two months later, the family's first
appearance since the tragedy. He is still very involved in the British Royal
family, serving as a godparent to Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and is a
godchild himself of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Knatchbull worked as a
film producer in the 1970s, for films such as Death on the Nile
(1978), The Quartermass Conclusion (1979),
Quartermass (1979), and A Deadly Game (1979).
