Check signed: "Octavus Cohen", 8¼x3¼. Charleston, South Carolina, February 26, 1919. Drawn on the Cohen's account at The Walker, Evans & Cogswell Co. Stationers, Charleston, South Carolina, payable to "James Nelson" in the amount of "100" dollars. Endorsed by Nelson on verso. Octavus Cohen (1860-1927) was born in Montgomery, Alabama, but was educated in Charleston, South Carolina where he made his home for the majority of his life. A journalist and newspaper publisher, he worked in Cohoes, Troy, Albany and New York City. He was an editor for the American Press Association where he wrote syndicated articles under the pennames "Crispin" and "Octy Cohen". In 1887 he established Charleston's The Sunday Budget, and later The Daily World. In addition to being a newspaper writer, Cohen wrote opera librettos, comedy-melodramas, a southern play and a high grade drama depicting life in the Elizabethan age. Married to Rebecca Cohen in 1889, he is the father of American author Octavus Roy Cohen. Toned. Slightly creased. Slightly soiled at right side from ink stamp on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
