ODELL SHEPARD
Shepard writes expressing his regret that the three phonographic records of the Trinity Hymm he received in the mail were broken and apologizes for his tardiness in letting the sender know what happened.
Typed Letter Signed: "Odell Shepard". 1 page5½x8½. On Department of English Trinity College Letterhead, Hartford, Connecticut, 1932, March 2. To a Mr. Martin Taylor. In Full: "Dear Mr Taylor. Your kindness in having made and in sending to me three phonographic records of my Trinity Hymm has not really made so little impression as my silence would indicate. These records reached me six days ago, after lying for a day or two in the janitor's office. I should have written to you about them at once. That I did not is due to these three insufficient causes: that I had to leave town shortly after they arrived, that I returned home with a mild case of grippe, and finally that I was reluctant to tell you that all three of them were broken in the mail. Needless to say, I am very sorry for this, on my own account as well as yours. I should have been glad to take one of them to President Ogilby, as you requested, and another to alumni secretary, Bill Brill, who is an enthusiasts of many sorts, including the phonographic. I take it for granted that the other seven records have been distributed-and indeed I heard from Judge McCook that he had one-so that I may never hear one played. Just the same, I am glad to know that they were made, and again I thank you for your interest in the song. Cordially yours," Odell Shepard (1884-1967) was an American poet, politician and professor. He was the lieutenant Governor of Connecticut from 1941-1943. Shepard graduated from Harvard, going on to teach at the English department at Yale. He taught at Trinity college as a English Professor from 1917-1946. He won the 1938 Pulitzer Prize for writing Pedlar's Progress, a biography of Bronson Alcott the father one of the foremost Transcendentalists Louisa May Alcott. Shepard edited the works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Louisa May Alcott and Henry David Thoreau. 2 filing holes at left edge. 2 horizontal letter fold creases. Otherwise fine condition.
