OGDEN NASH and AL HIRSCHFELD
Ogden Nash and Al Hirschfeld sign an album leaf.
Inscribed Signatures: "To Bob/Ogden Nash" on verso: "Hirschfeld", 4x6¼ album leaf. OGDEN NASH (1902-1971), who is best known for his humorous poetry, started writing advertising copy for Doubleday, Page Publishing in New York in 1925. That year, the company published his first book for children, The Cricket of Caradon. In 1930, Nash's first published poem, "Spring Comes to Murray Hill", appeared in the "New Yorker" magazine. Nash, who would write 19 books of poetry and collaborate on a musical comedy (One Touch of Venus, 1943), joined the staff of the "New Yorker" in 1932. His first collections of verse, Free Wheeling and Hard Lines, had been published the previous year. AL HIRSCHFELD (1903-2003) was a renowned cartoonist, author and theatrical caricaturist with "The New York Times" from 1929. From 1945 on, Hirschfeld began incorporating the name of his daughter, Nina, in his drawings. The addition became so popular with his audience that after 1956 he began adding a numeral after his signature to signify how many "NINAs" he had hidden in the work. Hirschfeld died on January 20, 2003 at the age of 99. Four file holes, 1 torn at upper margin. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
