World-renowned fashion designer Oleg Cassini writes to Danny Rentz about his early career
in fashion In part: "I got my start as a designer working for Patou in Paris, after having
apprenticed in my mothers atelier in Florence Italy." Raised in Italy, Cassini (1913-2006) came
to the U.S. in 1936. The official designer to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Cassini is
credited with innovative designs such as the Nehru jacket. A shrewd businessman, he
introduced the concept of licensing; putting his name on products such as perfumes and
sunglasses. He held about 50 licenses. Cassini, who believed that clothes should enhance, not
conceal a woman's form, was also a celebrated playboy who dated and married glamorous
