OLIVE HIGGINS PROUTY
Handwritten letter discussing her first novel, Bobbie, General
Manager
Autograph Letter signed: "Olive Higgins Prouty", 2 pages,
6x9½. Brookline, Massachusetts, 1945 April 2. On personal letterhead to
"My dear Mr. Roberts", in full: "I can't remember how many
copies of the first edition of 'Bobbie General Manager' there were. Stokes was
my only publisher then. The book has had many and different later editions. It
is still being read and public library books do wear out. Yes - it was my
first published novel - the outcome of a series of short stories that appeared
in the old McClure Magazine. The book is now so many years old. I can't imagine
why you should want this information - or any - about it. Sincerely".
Novelist Olive Higgins Prouty (1882-1974) wrote two books turned
into major films: Stella Dallas (1923, made into a stage and two film
versions, the latter starring Barbara Stanwyck); and Now Voyager
(1941, a 1942 film starring Bette Davis). Prouty, a philanthropist, was a patron
to young poet Sylvia Plath. The character Philomena Guinea in Plath's The
Bell Jar (1963), is said to be based on Prouty. A volume of her poetry,
Between the Barnacles and the Blueberries, was published posthumously.
Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
