In full: "Accept my thanks for your very polite invitation to witness the Exhibition at Springfield, and become your guest. I am sorry that it will not be consistent with my engagememts to be present and enjoy your hospitality. I am sure nothing would be wanting either in the place itself or the kindness of the people to make my visit agreeable and I hope you will not think me insensitive to the kindness of which I could conveniently avail myslf. Believe me Gentlemen, Yours truly." Physician and author Holmes (1809-1894) is best known for his poems "Old Ironsides" (1830) and "The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay" (1858), and for his urbane Breakfast-Table sketches, the latter first appearing in 1857 in the "Atlantic Monthly" (which he had named). He was the first Dean of Harvard Medical School. His son and namesake was a distinguished Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Lightly soiled. ½-inch paper separation at right edge of lower horizontal fold on each page. Tape remnants and pinhead sized paper loss on blank integral leaf. Otherwise, fine condition.
