Holmes", 4½x7. Boston, Massachusetts, October 17, no year. To
"Dear Miss Larkin". In full: "I have one of the best seats for
the Symphony Rehearsal tomorrow which will by empty unless some kind friend will
accompanyme. Will you be that obliging friend and give me great pleasure? Yours
very truly. If you say yes, I will call for you at the Vendome at 2 o'clock
punctually." Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition. Accompanied by
Autograph Envelope (4½x3), unmailed, addressed in Holmes' hand to "Miss
Lily Larkin" Right edge of envelope torn off. Otherwise, fine condition.Physician and author Holmes (1809-1894) is best known for his poems "Old
Ironsides" (1830) and "The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay" (1858), and for his urbane
Breakfast-Table sketches, the latter first appearing in 1857 in
the "Atlantic Monthly" (which he had named). He was the first Dean of
Harvard Medical School. His son and namesake was a distinguished Justice of
the U.S. Supreme Court. This short letter by an honored Bostonian is rich in the
city's lore. The historic Hotel Vendome was the site of a tragic fire in 1972,
which claimed the lives of 9 of the city's firefighters. On a more positive
notes, attendance at rehearsals of the Boston Symphony Orchestra remains a
beloved "bean town" tradition. Two items.
