OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES. Autograph Letter signed: "O W Holmes", 1p, 4½x7 with blank integral leaf. Boston, Massachusetts, 1872 December 28. To "My dear Sir". In full: "Your book is a delicate little mouthful which is so quickly swallowed that you will not wonder at my writing my thanks within an hour or two after receiving it. I have had much pleasure in letting these rose petals drift through my view and feel that its atmosphere is warmer and sweeter for the experience. I thank you very cordially and hope that someday we shall have a bouquet from you. Yours sincerely". Physician and author Holmes (1809-1894) is best known for his poems "Old Ironsides" (1830) and "The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay" (1858), and for his urbane Breakfast-Table sketches, the latter first appearing in 1857 in the "Atlantic Monthly" (which he had named). He was the first Dean of Harvard Medical School. His son and namesake was a distinguished Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Mounting tape remnant on verso of blank integral leaf. Fine condition.
