OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES. Autograph Letter signed: "O W Holmes", 1p, 4½x7. 21 Charles St. (Boston?), Dec. 30, n.y. On personal letterhead to "My dear Charles". In full: "Mr. Marsh has promised to dine with me at 3 o'clock next Saturday. James [illegible] has promised also. Now I must have you to make up my chew trio. Won't you please me by coming? Your affectionate [illegible]". Physician and author Holmes (1809-1894) is best known for his poems "Old Ironsides" (1830) and "The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay" (1858), and for his urbane Breakfast-Table sketches, the latter first appearing in 1857 in the "Atlantic Monthly" (which he had named). He was the first Dean of Harvard Medical School. His son and namesake was a distinguished Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Unevenly toned. Slightly soiled. Mounting paper remnant on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
