Holmes", 4¼x3¼. Boston, Massachusetts, 1886 March 17. To "Dear
Sir". In full: "I am much obliged to you for your kind invitation,
but I do not consider myself in the field as a lecturer. Yours truly."
Physician and author Holmes (1809-1894) is best known for his poems "Old
Ironsides" (1830) and "The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay" (1858), and for his urbane
Breakfast-Table sketches, the latter first appearing in 1857 in
the "Atlantic Monthly" (which he had named). He was the first Dean of
Harvard Medical School. His son and namesake was a distinguished Justice of
the U.S. Supreme Court. Slightly soiled at top edge. Otherwise, fine
condition.
