Typed Letter signed: "Olivia de Havilland", 1 page, 6x8¼. Hollywood, California, no date.
On personal letterhead to "Dear Mr. Martin". In full: "Thanks so much for your friendly note
welcoming me back from the Hollywood Victory Caravan. As a matter of fact I did not return
here with the HVC but remained in the East in order appear at an additional series of
rallies to sell War Bonds. I returned home only yesterday. I still have no picture plans to relate,
but hope to have something definite to tell you in my next letter. Your new work sounds most
interesting and I wish you well with it. Cordially". Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.Accompanied by matching, autograph envelope signed "Olivia de Havilland" in upper left
corner, addressed to J. Wayne Martin, Long Beach, California, postmarked Beverly Hills,
California, April 2, 1942. Lightly soiled. Opened at top and at upper right and left edges.
Otherwise, fine condition. Olivia de Havilland (1916-2020) received critical acclaim and Best
Actress Academy Awards for her roles in To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress
(1949). She was also nominated for an Oscar for Gone With the Wind (1939), of which
she is the last surviving star, Hold Back the Dawn (1941) and The Snake Pit (1948). Her
sister is actress Joan Fontaine. In April 1942, the Screen Actors Guild and the US movie
industry launched the Hollywood Victory Caravan, a train journey across America to raise
funds for the war effort. Besides de Havilland, the participants included Bob Hope, Spencer
Tracy, Jimmy Cagney, Bing Crosby, Claudette Colbert, Cary Grant, Groucho Marx, Laurel
and Hardy and many others stars. Two items.
