Typed Letter signed: "Olympia" as U.S. Senator, 1p,
6¼x8½. Washington, D.C., 1998 December 29. On her U.S. Senate letterhead
to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, U.S. Senate, Washington, D.C. In
full: "Thanks so much for sending me a signed copy of Secrecy. It
was very thoughtful of you. Your studies and investigations into the matter of
secrecy in American government make you uniquely qualified to write such a book.
As is typical of your thoughtful approach to issues, and in keeping with one of
the themes of Secrecy, your contributions are sure to provoke a healthy
debate. I'm certain you've brought fresh insights to an area not often explored,
and I look forward to reading the book. Again, I appreciate your generosity. I
hope the holidays have been a time of great joy for you and your loved ones, and
I wish you the very best for the coming new year! With best regards,
Sincerely," Handwritten postscript: "I appreciate your
thoughtfulness -! " Maine Republican Olympia Snowe (b. 1947)
served 8 terms in the US House of Representatives (1979-1995) and three in
the Senate (1995-2013). A moderate swing vote in the Senate, Snowe
helped broker compromises on several issues, including health care and
filibuster reform. In 1989, Snowe married Maine Governor John McKernan, whom
she had met while both served in the House. She was thus concurrently one of
Maine's US Representatives and its First Lady (1989-1995). She declined to
seek a fourth Senate term, citing the hyperpartisanship of the current Congress.

four terms (1977-2001). A prolific author, he served in the administrations
