ON TOP OF OLD SMOKY MOVIE CAST: GAIL DAVIS, JACK GARGAN and FRED MARTIN
Large 11x14 lobby card for On Top of Old Smoky signed by its stars Gail Davis, Jack Gargan and Fred Martin of the Cass County Boys. Rare signatures!
Inscribed lobby card signed: "For/Clint--/Best Wishes/Gail/Davis", "Hi Clint!!/ Jack Gargan" and "Best wishes/Fred Martin". Color, 14x11. Lobby card for the 1952 film On Top of Old Smoky, starring Gene Autry, Gail Davis as Jen Larabee, Smiley Burnette and the Cass County Boys (Fred Martin). GAIL DAVIS (1925-1997) was discovered by Autry, who had featured her in nearly 20 of his movies and 30 of his own program's episodes before giving her a series of her own as Annie Oakley. The show, a major success, was the first western television show to ever star a woman. A skilled rider and a crack shot, Davis did most of her own stunt work. Her numerous credits also include appearances in The Cisco Kid (1950-1952), The Lone Ranger (1950-1952) and Six Gun Mesa (1950). JACK GARGAN (1900-1958)was an English born actor who worked tirelessly throughout his 25 year career, credited with over 200 film appearances. Versatile, convincing, and equipped with a natural sensibility, Gargan played every role from court room attorney to fishing boat skipper. He's best known as a side character in Gene Autry westerns, including On Top of Old Smoky. He was also a regular recurring guest star on Perry Mason (1957-1958). FRED S. MARTIN (1916-2010) was an accordionist, co-founder of western singing trio The Cass County Boys. The group, originally named the Early Birds, was spotted by Gene Autry who wanted them to replace the Rough Riders as his singing crew. After World War II, Autry brought on The Boys to join the cast of Melody Ranch. They've been featured in a number of Autry's films, as shown here. Lightly toned at blank margin. Corners slightly creased. Lightly soiled at left edge. Ink note (unknown hand) at lower margin.
