ORMSBY B. THOMAS
The Civil War Captain, later U.S. Representative from Wisconsin,
signs name in black ink
Signature: "O.B. Thomas/ Wisconsin" in black ink. 7¼x1¾
clipping. Ormsby B. Thomas (1832-1904) was a United States
Representative from Wisconsin. He began practicing law in Prairie du Chien,
Wisconsin in 1856, serving as district attorney of Crawford County and later
in the Union Army during the Civil War as Captain of Company D, Thirty-first
Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. After the war, Thomas served as a
member of the Wisconsin State Assembly (1862, 1865, 1867), and the State Senate
(1880-1881), before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for
three terms (1885-1891), serving as chairman of the Committee on War Claims.
Irregularly cut. Left edge torn and frayed. Creased throughout. Otherwise, fine
