ORVILLE WRIGHT and LORIN WRIGHT. Partly Printed Check signed: "Orville Wright", 8½x3. Dayton, Ohio, 1937 December 24. Drawn on The Winters National Bank & Trust Co., payable to his older brother, Lorin Wright, for $1000. Endorsed: "Lorin Wright" on verso. LORIN WRIGHT (1862-1939) helped sister Katharine manage the Wright Cycle Company while their brothers were in Kitty Hawk. He visited Wilbur and Orville at Kitty Hawk in 1902, notified the press in 1903 after their first powered flights and loaned them his barn to build the machine that eventually became the first U.S. military aircraft. In 1911, Lorin helped younger brother ORVILLE WRIGHT (1871-1948) test the first airplane autopilot. Lorin later spied on Glenn Curtiss to gather information for the Wright patent suit against the rival airplane manufacturer. A week before this check was signed, on December 17, 1937, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom presented Orville with a scroll on the 34th anniversary of his first flight at Kitty Hawk. Vertical fold touches "vi" in Orville. Show through of bank stamps on verso do not touch signature. Fine condition.
