OSA MASSEN
Her rare signature on a movie still from The Gentleman
Misbehaves
Photograph signed: "Best Wishes/Osa Massen". B/w, 10x8. Shown
with Bob Haymes in movie still from The Gentleman Misbehaves (1946).
After the success of Greta Garbo, Hollywood searched actively for aloof foreign
beauties to fill similar roles. In 1939 Osa Massen, who had made two films in
her native Denmark, made her American film debut in Honeymoon in Bali.
Massen typically played the other woman or an unfaithful wife, as in A
Woman's Face (1939), which featured her confrontation with a blackmailing
Joan Crawford. In The Gentleman Misbehaves, Bob Haymes married her to
prevent her deportation, and then fell in love with her. In the 1950s and
early 1960s, she specialized in television, including three Perry Mason
episodes, still played mysterious foreigners. Massen was so adept at
languages that she doubled as a dialect coach; she taught John Wayne his
Swedish accent for The Long Voyage Home (1940). Edges lightly toned.
Corners creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
