The Canadian artist writes a letter as curator of the Songwriters
Hall of Fame.
Typed Letter signed: "Oscar Brand", 1 page, 8½x11. New
York, New York, 1977 July 19. On letterhead of The National Academy Of
Popular Music, Songwriters Hall of Fame addressed to Jane Mendoza, Forest Hills,
New York. In full: "Dear Jane, I wasn't able to find the goldfish
song, but I think a note to Ivor Novello, pub-lisher in London who printed most
of the songs Bea Lillie sang, would be in order. I'm sorry we couldn't send your
letter on to Rida Johnson Young, but she died a while back. I hope yu find time
to stop by and see us one day when you come back into New York City. Best
wishes," Songwriter, singer and author Oscar Brand was born on
February 7, 1920 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He began presenting the
"Folk-song Festival" on New York Public Radio in 1945. Later he worked as a
Music Director for NBC television programs like Sunday Show,
Exploring and Treasure Chest. Brand wrote ballets for
entertainers, jingles for commercials, and the score for the Kennedy
Center's Bicentennial musical Sing America Sing. He appeared and worked
on numerous documentaries and wrote seven best-selling books. Brand was
on the faculty at New York University and Hofstra University and he has an
honorary Doctorate from the University of Winnipeg. This letter was written
while he was the curator of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Normal mailing
