OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN. ALS: "Oscar Hammerstein" as Director,
Manhattan Opera House, 1p, 8½X11. New York,
1911 March 20. To Mrs. Josephson. In full: "I am sorry you are not
well; can I do anything for you? I'll not leave for London till probably the
middle of April. I received your picture; I will put it with my collection of
talented stage beauties and noble hearted women. Don't fail to come to see me;
the most interesting story is, that I received a letter from a woman 'Francis
Lee', offering to aid me in my divorce suit; truth is indeed stranger than
fiction." Theatrical impresario Hammerstein (1846-1919) built several
theaters in New York, mostly in Times Square. The great stars of stage and opera
appeared at his theaters. In 1906, he built the Manhattan Opera House,
known today as the Hammerstein Ballroom of Manhattan Center. His grandson was
lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. Creased. Folds, vertical fold touches last name.
Soiled and stained at blank areas. Light show through of ink blot on verso
touches 1 word.
