Typed Letter Signed: "Oscar Hammerstein", 1p, 7¼x10½. No place, but likely New York City, 1960 February 26. On his personal stationery to Mr. Norman Thomas, New York, New York. In full: "I am delighted that you were at the luncheon for Lord Attlee given by the United World Federation, and I am happy to see that you joined UWF at that time. I hope that you will continue to take an active interest in our work to establish a world at peace under just, effective and enforceable world law through a strengthened United Nations. We need the support and thoughtful suggestions of key citizens such as you if we are to make effective our political action program." OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II wrote the lyrics for some of the greatest musicals in theatrical history, including Friml's Rose Marie, Kern's Show Boat, Romberg's Desert Song and Rodgers' Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music. He won a Pulitzer Prize for South Pacific and Academy Awards for "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "The Last Time I Saw Paris". NORMAN THOMAS (1884-1968) was the Socialist Party's candidate for President in 1928, 1932, 1936, 1940, 1944 and 1948. A pacifist, he had co-founded, with Burton K. Wheeler and Charles A. Lindbergh, the America First Committee (AFC) in 1940. The organization quickly became the largest isolationist group in the U.S. The United World Federalists had been founded in Asheville, North Carolina on February 23, 1947, when five existing world government groups merged to further their goals for world peace. The organization's membership was open to any American except those with Communist or Fascist persuasions. Slightly creased. "File" written in unknown hand at upper right margin. Fine condition.
