Photograph Signed: "Oscar Handlin" in red felt tip. 5x7. American historian Oscar Handlin
(1915-2011) received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1940, the year after he joined the faculty
there, teaching primarily U.S. social and economic history. A prolific author, Handlin was
awarded the Pulitizer Prize in History for The Uprooted (1951), a history of the
immigration movement in the U.S. after 1820. Many of his books were written in
collaboration with his first wife, Mary Flug Handlin, and Handlin also wrote a monthly book
column for "Atlantic Monthly". A full professor at Harvard from 1954, Handlin was
Director of the University Library from 1979-1983. Printed, pencil and pen notations on
verso (unknown hand). Otherwise, fine condition.
