Truman's Secretary of the Interior declines an invitation from Ben S. Fisher to attend the Annual Dinner of the Administrative Law Section.
Typed Letter signed: "Oscar Chapman", as Secretary of the Interior, 1 page, 7x9. Washington, 1950 April 21. On letterhead of The Secretary of the Interior addressed to Mr. Ben S. Fisher, Chairmen of the Administrative Law Section, Bar Association of the District of Columbia, Washington, D.C. In full: "I deeply appreciated receiving your letter of April 13 with its cordial invitation to attend the Annual Dinner of the Administrative Law Section to be held at the Shoreham Hotel on April 29. I wish that I were in a position to send you my acceptance but, unfortunately, an engagement to which I have been committed for some time forces me to decline. With my sincere regrets, I send you my best wishes. Sincerely yours," Oscar Littleton Chapman (1896-1978) was born in Omega, Virginia. He served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps from 1918 to 1920 and in 1929 he received an LL.B. from Denver's Westminster Law School. In the 1930 Senate campaign he was Edward P. Costigan's manager and Alva B. Adams' manager two years later. When FDR was elected president he appointed Chapman as the Assistant Secretary in the Department of the Interior. After impressing Harry S. Truman he was promoted to undersecretary in 1946. In 1948 Truman was elected president and he would soon promote Chapman to the Secretary of Interior serving from 1949-1953. After his political career he practiced law for the firm of Chapman, Duff and Paul. Mailing fold through center. Corners lightly creased. Fine condition.
