The Civil War Union officer and U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania signs his name in black ink
Signature: "Oscar L. Jackson/ New Castle/ Penna" in black ink. March 9, 1886. Oscar L. Jackson (1840-1920) was a Pennsylvanian school teacher who served during the American Civil War. He entered the Union army as the captain of Company H of the Sixty-third Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and would work his way up through the ranks to lieutenant colonel, before being shot in the face by a Confederate soldier during the 2nd Battle of Corinth and left for dead; he was later was appointed colonel by brevet after the war. After the war he studied laws and served as district attorney (1868-1871) and in 1878 he published the book The fiery trail: a Union officer's account of Sherman's last campaigns. Jackson was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1884 and would serve two terms. Irregularly cut. Toned. Pinpoint ink stains. Ink smeared slightly but not on signature. Left edge frayed and torn. Otherwise, fine condition.
