Book inscribed and signed: "Inscribed for/Mr. Robert Watchorn/from his friend/Oscar S. Straus", 456 pages, 6x9. Hard cover edition of his book, Under Four Administrations: From Cleveland to Taft. (Boston & N.Y.: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1922) German-born Oscar Solomon Straus (1850-1926) was US Secretary of Commerce and Labor (1906-1909), the first Jewish Cabinet member. He served three tours as US Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire (1887-1889, 1898-1899, 1909-1910). He also served on the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague. His brothers Isador and Nathan Straus owned Macy's department store. Isador and his wife Ida - who refused to enter a lifeboat without him - perished on the Titanic. Signature page is lightly toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) above Book Plate. Pages lightly soiled at edges. Cover edges and corners worn. Overall, good condition.
